Today, as I’m writing this, is a glorious afternoon on Ocean Beach. It’s actually swimsuit weather. So while I was walking the dog on the beach I came across this installation piece being exhibited between today, September 5th and September 15th, tide willing.
Thom Ross is the installation artist who created this piece, using a photograph that was taken in 1902 as the inspiration. The panoramic photograph shows William Frederick ‘Buffalo Bill’ Cody mounted on his horse at front and center, and lined up beside him were the Native American members of his ‘Wild West’ troupe. Thom has a copy of the original photo in his tent on site.
The installation of 120 figures re-creates the photograph but is not meant to be historically accurate. When looking at the piece it kind of conjures up a whimsy of historical reference. It was totally wonderful to come upon the installation by surprise.
