Sitting on the deck next to the koi pond I can hear the traffic on the road below but it doesn’t bother me like it would at home. The tall stand of redwood trees filter out much of the noise and make this place in the middle of town seem like it is in the middle of nowhere. It doesn’t take much effort to imagine it.
The koi see me and gather around in a swimmingly way, sliding past each other, barely missing each other. Their colors move with the movement of the water – oranges, blacks, whites, yellows, and golds shimmer with each pass. They never seem to stop. I drop my hand in the water and a few come by to kiss it, fully expecting to suck food out of my fist. I tease. No food.
I could make an effort to go somewhere. Hiking over the hill, to Muir Woods, or just into town. I could go over to Green Gulch and contemplate their garden, or to Muir Beach to walk on the sand.
But I’d rather stay here and watch the colors move in the pond and the sun move across the sky. Listening to the faint sounds of life in the town below.
