San Francisco may be home to the Mexican burrito, but travel north over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito, or in this case, to Mill Valley and you’ll discover another, and original, take on the burrito wrap at Avatar’s Punjabi Burrito.
What, you might ask, is a Punjabi Burrito?
Well if you are a fan of Indian food, you could probably guess once and get it, although you might miss a few items. Their basic burrito is a mild curry (made with garbanzo beans, potatoes, pickled carrots, fruit chutney, tamarind sauce, yogurt, and green herb salsa) and saffron rice wrapped in a whole wheat chapati. While the meal would sound better if it was just explained as ‘a curry and rice in a chapati’, it’s kind of fun to know what really inside and marvel at how all of those ingredients go together so well.
There is also quite a list of extra ingredients that can be added to the basic burrito. Some classic favorites are pumpkin and chicken. But there are also such items as shrimp, eggplant, lamb, and various kinds of chicken. And of course, you can have your burrito naked, as in curry and rice on a plate instead of inside the chapati.
Avatar’s is a family run affair. The place opened in 1989, a few decades after the first Mexican burritos were made in San Francisco and well before international wraps hit the culinary scene. Avatar is no longer around, but his family carries on at both locations.
Punjabi Burritos would be a great meal before or after a hike in the hills around Mill Valley or a fun place to stop after touring the giant trees at Muir Woods.
