Dickerman Prints Gallery is showing a new suite of prints of musician portraits by legendary photographer Baron Wolman, selected from his images made for Rolling Stone Magazine, 1967-1969. Included in the exhibition are rare and intimate glimpses of:

George Harrison, Janis Joplin, Chuck Berry, Frank Zappa, The Grateful Dead, Miles Davis, Johnny Cash, Joni Mitchell, Grace Slick, Pete Townshend, Joan Baez, Jimi Hendrix

As Rolling Stone’s first staff photographer, Baron Wolman saw the music firsthand. He was on-stage with Jimi Hendrix, backstage with the Rolling Stones and in front of the stage with Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin. Rock icons Grace Slick and the Grateful Dead performed for the camera in his Haight-Ashbury studio and from 1967 through the early seventies, his pictures appeared in virtually every issue.

“None of the images in the show are of the artists performing, but are distinctive, often intimate portraits which offer a window into these legendary heroes as people,” according to Seth Dickerman, curator and printer of the show. “I had never before seen a photograph of a relaxed, smiling Miles Davis before, and I don’t think many other people have either!”

Selected from Baron Wolman’s personal archives, the photos on display were scanned from the original negatives and digitally remastered to breathe new life, heart and soul into the portraits. While some of these images have been seen over the years, even Mr. Wolman agrees that the images on display are sharper, richer, more vibrant and have never looked better.
