The East Bay art scene may or may not be lesser known than its San Francisco counterpart, but it is none the less lively. Artists tended to keep to their studios in the gritty neighborhoods of East and West Oakland and West Berkeley. Now, not so gritty, and on the edge of becoming unaffordable, galleries are popping up from Grand Ave. to Jack London Square. At one point Oakland boasted (and still does, although I don’t know if it’s still true) that there were more artists per capita living there than anywhere else in the US.

First Friday Oakland Art Walk happens on the first Friday evening of the month. Participating galleries are primarily around 23rd St and Telegraph Avenue in Oakland. Galleries are open between 5 and 10pm.
East Bay Open Studios happens the first weekends in June of every year. Check out their web site for the exact dates.
